Quotes:
« Lisa: You know, there's too many buttons in the world. There's too many buttons and they're just–There's way too many just begging to be pressed, they're just begging to be pressed, you know? They're just–they're just begging to be pressed, and it makes me wonder, it really makes me fucking wonder, why doesn't anyone ever press mine? Why am I so neglected? Why doesn't anyone reach in and rip out the truth and tell me that I'm a fucking whore, or that my parents wish I were dead?
»
« Susanna: Because you're dead already, Lisa! No one cares if you die, Lisa, because you're dead already. Your heart is cold. That's why you keep coming back here. You're not free. You need this place, you need it to feel alive. It's pathetic.
»
[Lisa falls down to her knees and screams]
« Susanna: I've wasted a year of my life. Maybe everybody out there is a liar. And maybe the whole world is "stupid" and "ignorant". But I'd rather be in it. I'd rather be fucking in it, then down here with you.
»
« Susanna: [first lines, narrating] Have you ever confused a dream with life? Or stolen something when you have the cash? Have you ever been blue? Or thought your train was moving while sitting still? Maybe I was just crazy. Maybe it was the '60s. Or maybe I was just a girl… interrupted.
»
« Valerie: [about Daisy] What would you have said to her?
»
« Susanna: I don't know. That I was sorry. That I will never know what it was like to be her. But I know what it's like to want to die. How it hurts to smile. How you try to fit in but you can't. You hurt yourself on the outside to try to kill the thing on the inside.
»
« Valerie: Susanna, it's all well and good to tell me all this, but you gotta tell some of this to your doctors.
»
« Susanna: How the hell am I supposed to recover when I don't even understand my disease?
»
« Valerie: But you do understand it. You spoke very clearly about it a second ago. But I think what you've gotta do is put it down. Put it away. Put it in your notebook, but get it out of yourself. Away so you can't curl up with it anymore.
»
« Susanna: Lisa thinks it's a gift. That it lets you see the truth.
»
« Valerie: Lisa's been here for eight years.
»
« Susanna: [crying] I'm so sorry. I was a bitch. I was a bitch.
»
« Valerie: Don't drop anchor here, you understand?
»
« Susanna: [narrating] When you don't want to feel, death can seem like a dream. But seeing death, really seeing it, makes dreaming about it fucking ridiculous. Maybe, there's a moment growing up when something peels back… Maybe, maybe, we look for secrets because we can't believe our minds…

[overlapping words]
« Susanna: All I know is that I began to feel things again. Whatever I was, I knew there was only one way back to the world and that was to use the place to talk. So I saw the great and wonderful Dr. Wick three times a week, and I let her hear every thought in my head.

Runtime:127 minutes
Plots:
A directionless teenager is rushed to a mental institution after a supposed suicide attempt and befriends a group of troubled women who deeply influence her life.
In 1967, Susanna Kaysen has a headache and chases a bottle of aspirin with a bottle of vodka. This lands her in the mental institution Claymoore, where Dr. Melvin Potts diagnoses her with borderline personality disorder. When she arrives at Claymoore Nurse Valerie Owens greets her and shows her around the women’s ward where she meets Georgina Tuskin, a pathological liar fixated on “The Wizard of Oz”; Polly Clark, a childish schizophrenic; Janet Webber, a sardonic anorexic patient; Daisy Randone who won’t let anyone into her room and only eats her father’s chicken; and Lisa Rowe, a sociopath who controls the other patients and makes the Claymoore nurses’ lives hell. Through the movie, Lisa gains and loses control over Susanna and shows how bad she can be. How long will Susanna last at Claymoore and how does she take back control of her life? This movie battles subjects such as mental heath, abuse, self-harm and suicide.
In 1967, Susanna Kaysen is depressed and directionless after finishing high school. Afterwards, she discusses this with a psychiatrist. She had been having some delusions. She had also been having an affair with the husband of her parents’ friend. The doctor suggests that combining a bottle of aspirin and a bottle of vodka was a suicide attempt; she denies it; he recommends a short period of rest at Claymoore a private mental hospital full of noisy, crazy people. Georgina Tuskin is a pathological liar and Susanna’s roommate. Polly Clark has been badly scarred by fire. Daisy Randone self-harms and won’t eat in the presence of other people. Lisa Rowe is a sociopath, the biggest exasperation for the staff, like Nurse Valerie Owens, and the biggest influence on the other girls in the hospital. Lisa has a history of escapes, so gaining access to personal medical files is not a problem. Susanna’s boyfriend Tobias Jacobs is concerned that she seems too comfortable living with her institutionalized friends.
