Passion Fish

Plots: After an accident leaves her a paraplegic, a former soap opera star struggles to recover both emotionally and mentally, until she meets her newest nurse, who has struggles of her own. May-Alice Culhane was a successful soap opera star, but a car accident has left her bound to a wheelchair. She returns to her now-empty family home in the bayous of Louisiana which she had eagerly left years before. She drinks heavily and vents her bitterness on the succession of nurses who are hired to take care of her and immediately quit because she is so unbearable. Chantelle is the latest of these nurses, and May-Alice is told that Chantelle is the last nurse she’ll get. Chantelle for reasons of her own, is also in a position where she badly needs the job to work out. The movie focuses on how these two women become friends and help each other heal emotionally. New York-based daytime soap opera actress May-Alice Culhane decides to head back to her long empty family home in Louisiana Cajun country following immediate medical attention and therapy after being hit by a vehicle as she got out of a taxi. Now paraplegic, she plans to wallow in self-pity and anger while she does nothing to help herself. She ends up spending her time largely watching television and drinking as she goes through one nurse caregiver after another in she driving them away in directing her anger toward them. The one who ends up persevering is Chantelle, originally from Chicago, she who is open enough to admit that she sticks around despite the antagonism as she needs the job. What she does not admit is the reason for needing the job as she brings with her some emotional baggage of her own. Although aware that they are still within an employer/employee relationship, they slowly come to the realization that they need someone – the other – to get through their issues, as Chantelle not only deals with her past but is wooed by local cowboy Sugar LeDoux, and as May-Alice finds reasons to rejoin the living, such as rediscovering something more meaningful to occupy her time and in reconnecting with Rennie Boudreau, married with five children, he her teenage crush who Chantelle has hired to do repairs around the house.
